Oak in 2 Pieces - 14" x 7" x 13" - August, 1997
This is the first wood sculpture I ever did. We rented a vacation house in upstate NY and were getting very relaxed with absolutely nothing to do all day. I wanted to try my hand at carving, so I grabbed a log from the woodpile and started hacking away. It took me two or three days to cut out the fingers since all I had was a rusty old handsaw and a rasp I found in the garage. The "cigarette" is a stick I picked up on the creek bank that had the right feeling to it - even the proper type of streaking in the grain.
I was exTREMly proud of myself and couldn't stop staring at my masterpiece while we would be having cocktails in the evening and I was supposed to be appreciating the beautiful Catskill Mountain sunsets.
